Long-Term Environmental Factors

  • Childhood physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. Including hostile or explosive households and chronic invalidation from caregivers.

  • Neglect or repeated abandonment

  • Early separation from a caregiver

  • Chronic feelings of self-disgust or shame throughout childhood

Persistent Biological Brain Changes:

  • High levels of Cortisol (The stress hormone)

  • Reduced Oxytocin or Serotonin Production
(The bonding and mood regulating hormones)

  • Limbic system changes
(controls survival-based emotions such as fear, causing deep intense emotions, short-term memory, faulty threat assessments, and impulse control)

A Genetic Vulnerability

  • A hereditary Serotonin-processing gene variation

  • But a consistent, nurturing and validating environment, with early exposure to treatment during adolescence can prevent the susceptibility of developing BPD with this gene
